Under routine circumstances, patients go to the hospital and can usually expect to have visitors as well as creature comforts like flower delivery and ample plugs for cell phones and iPads. Unfortunately, a trip to the hospital for Covid-19 will not be routine circumstances for either patients or their family.
First, because the virus is highly contagious and can be deadly, patients who are being treated for the disease must go into isolation to protect others. For patients with mild symptoms, isolation at home is the currently recommendation from Washington State Health Department (DOH) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC).
When circumstances prevent home isolation, local governments are setting up quarantine and isolation facilities in former hotels and building field hospitals to provide patients dedicated space to receive treatment and recover.
Because of the average length of active symptoms, patients who go to quarantine sites or field hospitals can expect to spend 14 days away from family and friends beginning from the point of diagnosis to the point they are fully recovered and receive a doctor's OK to return to their normal lives.
