Drive-through testing is for patients who are exhibiting symptoms, but are not yet in severe respiratory distress. Your doctor will determine if you should go to a testing site or another facility such as a clinic or the emergency room. At this time, due to limited availability of test kits, all testing sites require screening for symptoms as a precursor to consider administering a test. In addition, some sites limit access to in-network patients and people with specific risk factors.
If your doctor refers you for Covid-19 tests outside of a clinic or hospital, here's what to expect.
The testing site will be set up in a parking lot. It will include a series of tents and everyone on site will be wearing disposable personal protective equipment (PPE), so they'll look like actors in a disaster film. They're not acting, but they're still human and likely to respond well to a joke or smile when you finally get through the line. They appreciate your patience with the process.
And the process is likely to take a bit of time. When you first arrive you'll be directed to enter a drive lane that's coned off to direct cars one at a time past the registration and screening stations.
Stay in your car from the moment you enter the drive lane until you exit the testing site. Leave all of the windows up until instructed otherwise.
As with the line to get to the testing site, service times vary and it can sometimes take up to 45 minutes between the time you check in and the time a technician comes to screen you for symptoms. When they are ready to see you, turn your heater and air conditioning off at this point so air will not be pushed out of the car when you open the window. Have your photo ID ready and hold it up to the closed window for the lab personnel to read. They will confirm your appointment, and complete the registration and or screening process. If your symptoms indicate the need for a COVID test, your lab tech will let you know whether they will do the tests at that station or direct you forward to another station.
When the lab technicians are ready to perform the test, you will be instructed to roll down the patient's window just enough for the tech to take four nasal swabs, two in each nostril. It might be uncomfortable, but it won't hurt.
If you think you might move your head during the test, ask the tech if there's a preferred way for you to present your schnoz for best access and stability.
Once the swabbing is done, the tech will drop the swabs into bags, seal them up, confirm that your name and birth date match the labels on the bags, and send them to the lab for testing. You'll get information on how to get the results and when they should be ready.
At this point, you're free to drive directly home and go back to bed.
Here's where you can find local drive-through and drive-up up testing sites in King, Kitsap, Pierce, and Snohomish counties.
